DESCRIPTION: Dent, 61 Strand, London, a rare eight day marine chronometer with Dent's staple balance, 12 jewel, free sprung, reverse fusee movement with Earnshaw's escapement, bimetallic staple balance, blued steel helical balance spring and diamond endstone, Roman numeral silvered dial with wind indicator, blued steel spade and poker hands, contained in a lacquered brass bowl, and mounted in a gimballed mahogany and mahogany veneer box with brass furniture, the front with round plaque marked "3105"
CONDITION: movement good overall, running, a bit oily, a few screws with minor oxide, scattered minor spotting and staining, minor verdigris on mainspring setup pawl, fusee stop spring with a few spots of oxide, dial very good, with a few fine scratches, minute hand with minor bends, bowl and gimbals polished and lacquered, box very good, with minor marks and fine scratches, hardware with losses to lacquer and some tarnish. CONDITION: box and movement by association, movement running, plates with minor staining, some steel with scattered, minor oxide, balance spring with losses to bluing, dial with minor marks and dirt, hands good, bowl with dings and scratches, small gap between bezel and dial, bezel and bowl thread with wear, care required when tightening, box refinished and with minor splits and losses to veneer, rectangular name/ number plate on box front removed, the recess now with putty filler, some lifting and loss to brass inlay. Negus, New York, two day marine chronometer, 11 jewel fusee movement with decorative scraping, Earnshaw's escapement, freesprung, cut bimetallic balance, diamond endstone, and blued steel helical balance spring, now with later break circuit mechanism closing the contacts at one second intervals, Roman numeral silvered dial with wind indicator and blued steel spade and poker hands, lacquered brass bowl, the bezel engraved "U.S. Navy", and contained in a 20th century purpose made box with screw terminals, serial #1215
CONDITION: running, plates with minor spotting and fine marks and scratches, dial good, hands good, bowl with specks of tarnish, inner surface of bezel with minor staining and verdigris, box with minor scratches, dents, and losses to finish. This chronometer was one of 41 listed in the Record of Trial of Repaired Chronometers, December 1886- June 1887, included in the 1892 publication "Observations Made During the Year 1887 at the United States Naval Observatory". Of the 41 chronometers in the trial, 22 were of Negus' manufacture.

CONDITION: oily, minor staining, running, dial with haze and spotting, tip of hour hand shortened, glass with scratches and a few chips, bowl and bezel tarnished, inner surface of bezel with staining, bowl with two minor dents. According to the consignor, this chronometer was recovered by his father from an abandoned Japanese vessel at the end of World War II. He left the box, as it was too bulky to carry in his backpack.

Ships 22- 1943 No. 7643" and "Harold S. Vanderbilt", contained in a three tier mahogany box with flush mounted brass furniture, serial #7643
CONDITION: running, plates with scattered minor marks and fine scratches, barrel bridge screwheads with minor marring and loss to blue, bowl and gimbals in old lacquer, box with minor scratches, box top replaced, and with split, plaque missing, box and hardware with old finish. It appears that this chronometer was once the property of Harold Stirling Vanderbilt (1884-1970), the great grandson of shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. Harold was an avid and competitive yachtsman, winning numerous King's, Astor, and America's cups. He was a charter inductee to the America's Cup Hall of Fame at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island. There is also a room of his sailing memorabilia on display at "Marble House", the opulent Vanderbilt summer mansion at Newport, RI., built in 1895.

CONDITION: not running, one with broken staff, will wind and set, the other lacking staff and with broken winding pinion, balance, spring, roller, and winding parts present, dials and hands good, brass hardware with losses to lacquer and tarnish, boxes with scratches, losses to finish, and tape residue, glazed box dimensions listed

DESCRIPTION: Deck watches- 2 (Two), Zenith / Vail Watch Co., 8 day, mounted chronometer watches, 15 jewel stem wind and set nickel movements, silvered dials with wind indicator and blued steel hands, contained in gimballed brass bowls, with 3 tier mahogany boxes
CONDITION: one running, the other will not set or wind, will run with pressure on train, one bezel glass missing, boxes dirty, and with minor scratches. The Vail Watch Co. was a subsidiary of Zenith, set up in the U.S.A. to manufacture automobile clocks. Vail received a U.S. government contract to increase the jewel count, and help reduce the shortage of available deck watches for the Navy.

CONDITION: Zenith and Hamilton 940 running, Crescent St. with good staff, missing barrel and ratchet wheel, Hamilton 928 with broken staff, boxes with wear and losses
