Lot#: 365

DESCRIPTION: American Cuckoo Clock Co., Philadelphia, Penn., cuckoo wall clock with German 30 hour, time and gong strike with animated cuckoo bird, weight driven brass movement in a wood case featuring leaves, a prominent bird on top, and fox carved in the round after the grapes, a painted wood cuckoo bird with articulated beak and wings, and the dial with bone hands.
CONDITION: Breitinger & Kuntz became unhappy with the number of their imported cuckoo clocks arriving from Germany damaged, that they began importing movements and having cases made locally, often in native Walnut and American woods. The dial on this clock is stamped "Germany" and may be an earlier example, but they may have imported components such as dials, bellows and hands as well as movements. There are small losses to a couple of the leaf tips and upper most wing of the bird on top. The case is otherwise in very good condition The unsigned brass movement has been serviced recently. The bellows have been restored with white zephyr and the whistles recovered with a high-quality red marbled paper. One of the weights has a hollow portion in the bottom. Dark, but largely complete rear label has been covered with clear plastic. The carved wooden cuckoo bird is dingy with some small losses of paint. The movement ticks, strikes, and the bird operates as it should. An image of the American Cuckoo Clocks first factory in Philadelphia (then under the name of Breitinger & Kuntz) can be seen here:
