The Manchester Downtown Hotel (formerly the Radisson Hotel), Manchester, NH

Lot#: 605

DESCRIPTION: Victor Strong Box fireproof strong box, heavy steel box with black paint and gold pinstripes, cast handles on both ends, hinged lid with hasp for padlock, with applied S.C. Herring & Co., New York plaque with company name, address, scene with figures, and 1852 patent date from an earlier safe
CONDITION: An 1888 publication about New York recounts how the Herring company offered $1000 to any competitor safe that could last half as long as a Herring safe in resisting tools and fire. The brass plaque, taken off an earlier safe and applied to this one, on the top of this safe is a dramatic depiction of this challenge with distraught competitors, a test furnace in the background, and melted safes in the foreground. Some of the black paint has chipped or scratched off the case. The gold pinstripes have darkened. The brass plaque has verdigris, but is in excellent shape. This is a heavy item if shipping is a consideration.
