DESCRIPTION: Leonard Wells Volk, a bronze statue of a standing Abraham Lincoln, holding the Emancipation Proclamation the well modeled figure in formal attire, with patinated surface, and marked "Copyright by Leonard W. Volk, 1891", mounted to a round, black granite base. This bronze was first displayed in the Columbian Exposition World's Fair in Chicago in the Springfield Watch Pavillion in 1892 - 93. The Illinois Watch Co. produced the Abe Lincoln model specifically for introduction at this fair.
CONDITION: very good overall, surface with lacquer. Note that this is a 20th century recast of the Volk original. Leonard Wells Volk (1828- 1895) was an American sculptor, and maker of one of two life masks of President Lincoln. He studied in Paris under Jean-Leon Gerome, and pursued further study in Rome. He was a founder of the Chicago Academy of Design, where he taught for eight years. A copy of this figure was shown at the 1892 World's Columbian Exposition, in the Springfield Watch pavilion.
