Lot#: 505

DESCRIPTION: Clocks- 2 (Two) German Mantel: (1) Germany, mantel clock, 8 day, time and gong strike, spring-driven movement in a figured walnut case with chamfered corners on a base with cavetto molding, the front faces with brass string inlay, 5 inch dial with Roman numerals, Breguet style steel hands, c1870. (2) Kienzle, Schwenningen, Germany, mantel clock, 8 day, time and gong strike, spring-driven movement in an oak case with bun feet, supporting a cavetto molded base, full twist pillars flanking a carved floral design, topped by a broken arch, 5 inch painted metal dial depicting the Greek myth of Demophon and Phyllis as conceived by Edward Burne-Jones in his painting from 1882 titled "The Tree of Forgiveness", c1925.
CONDITION: (1) The case is nicely made, with brass string inlay, but a bit of the inlay is lifting. There are a few age splits and top dents. The paper dial is later and worn; the thin brass bezel encloses flat glass. The square movement with lantern pinions and heavy brass plates ticks and strikes. (2) The case has an original finish with a bit of a haze on the top arch. The painted metal dial is in excellent condition and looks to be hand-painted. The movement ticks and strikes, but is dirty and will need cleaning. Bezel has been repaired at the hinge. Dimensions are for the Kienzle. An image of "The True of Forgiveness" can be seen here:
