DESCRIPTION: Chelsea Clock Co., Boston, Mass., deck clock, 8 day, time only, spring-driven jeweled balance wheel movement in a brass case with hinged bezel, 7.5 inch silvered dial with white Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds, reading "SUN SHIPBUILDING AND DRY DOCK CO. / CHESTER, PA., U.S.A."
CONDITION: The heavy brass case has fine scratches and an array of small dark spots, probably oxidation. The catch hook on the bezel has broken off. The silvered dial has some dark tarnish on the lower edge, but is otherwise nice. the hands appear to be correct, though possibly repainted. The rectangular Chelsea movement ticks briskly. Movement serial number 294177. Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Company was a major shipbuilding company in Chester, Pennsylvania from 1917 to 1989. At its peak in was the country's largest shipyard. It participated in the U.S. government's Emergency Shipbuilding Program during the Second World War. Later, the company was part of the U.S. aerospace industry, building experimental propulsion structures, including the largest U.S. rocket test chamber in1963.
