Lot#: 404

DESCRIPTION: Eagle Manufacturing Co., Portsoken, England, 8 day, time and strike, spring brass movement Venetian style mantel clock.
CONDITION: Rosewood and rosewood veneered case in the manner of a Venetian-style American cases. It is in nice condition in original finish has a small chip on the bottom right corner. Painted dial on copper is original and has age darkened with some surface stains. The American made movement has some solder repairs on the front plate that will need some attention. Original hands and tablet. Nice label on the back. E.J. Taylor, in his book "American Clocks for the Collector", neatly brackets the possibilities for the site of this PORTSOKEN and identifies a likely entrepreneur who acted as a London agent for U.S. made movements. The agent, William Holloway in Jerome's time, later becomes Nelson J. Holloway & Co., and seems to specialize in fitting U. S. movements into English cases. Portsoken is a ward in the city of London and site of the Holloway offices. An interesting Anglo-American clock.
