DESCRIPTION: Janet Taylor, London, 7.5 inch radius, black metal ladder frame, brass arc signed Mrs. Janet Taylor, 104 Minories, London" with inset silver scale with graduations reading -5 to 150, tangent screw vernier adjustment, index magnifier, sighting telescopes, multiple sun shades for index and horizon mirrors, ebony handle, all in a felt-lined dovetailed mahogany box with accessories.
CONDITION: The set is only missing a shade that screws on to the end of the telescopes. There is some type of dried black residue on the lid of the box. The sextant is in good condition. Janet Taylor was a famous English astronomer and navigation expert in the 1800s. She wrote many books, founded a science academy, invented improvements to marine instruments, and ran a nautical instrument company. The signature on the brass arc is worn, but there is little doubt that it is her name and London address.
