The Manchester Downtown Hotel (formerly the Radisson Hotel), Manchester, NH

DESCRIPTION: J. Prentice, New York, "Captain Douglas" reflecting circle or reflecting alidade, lacquered brass, straight-edge engraved "J. Prentice", "283", and "New York", protractor arc graduated from 0 to 130, central crosshair reticle, swinging plotting arm with vernier scale graduated from 0 to 30, sighting vane, half-silvered mirror, and index reflector, all in a felt-lined wooden case. This instrument is named after its inventor, Sir Howard Douglas, renowned British military engineer.
CONDITION: Original wooden case has been reglued. Felt lining is a bit loose. Some of the lacquer protecting the brass is starting to darken. Mirrors are in tact, but a bit foggy. Swing arm are moves smoothly. J. Prentice had an advertisement listed in a New York business directory in 1845.
