DESCRIPTION: John Lilley & Son, London, mariner's octant or reflecting quadrant, 11.75 inch radius, ebony frame with brass arm and fittings, threaded pencil cap and inlaid name plate on the crossbar reading "Lilley * London", inlaid graduated arc reading -5 to 100, vernier scale marked from 0 to 20 arc minutes, knurled brass tangent and locking screws, three sun shades (one green and two red), back sight vane with one hole, and forsight vane with two pinholes and swiveling red glass shutter, all in a stepped oak keystone box that has been painted green.
CONDITION: Instrument appears to be complete. The brass has some tarnish and fingerprints from years of use. Mirrors are present but silvering has deteriorated some, especially around the edges. Solid wood frame and legible inlays. Oak case has an old coat of green paint and some of the brass hardware has been replaced.
