DESCRIPTION: Instrument maker's trade sign, thick wooden board and batten construction with arched top, molded edges, black background with red and gold trim and hand-painted lettering reading "Jos Willan / Boston / Est. 1851 / Instrument Maker", applied sculptural elements made of wood and sheet copper include an inverted pair of dividers and an octant with partial signature.
CONDITION: Probably a reproduction made with some old materials, a skilled artist went to great lengths to artificially age and distress this handsome sign in a convincing manner. The age of the reproduction itself adds to the verisimilitude.
