DESCRIPTION: Joseph Knibb, London, a late 17th century, two train tall clock with associated case, the 8 day, six pillar time and strike movement with riveted latches, bolt and shutter maintaining power, count wheel striking, and recoil escapement, 9 1/2" square brass dial with matted center, roman numeral silvered chapter ring, date aperture above 6:00, cherub spandrels, and signed "Joseph Knibb Londini Fecit", finely finished, fretted, blued steel hands, the oak case in the manner of Jasper Braem, with ebonized moldings and ball feet, oyster veneers, marquetry panels with gadrooned urns issuing flowers and foliage, and with perching birds, flat top bonnet with ebonized Solomonic columns, glazed sides, and marquetry frieze, with brass clad pendulum, brass cased weights, brass pulleys, and correct winding key
CONDITION: movement good overall, with repairs consistent with age, ticks and strikes, escapement with excessive drop. Early style count wheel outside back plate. Bell with countersunk mounting hole. Hour and minute hands of appropriate style, seconds hand replaced, dial good, seat board with risers. Case has some repairs to veneers and marquetry, feet and top board of bonnet replaced. Lenticle glass replaced. Hood was originally rising, now sliding (many rising hoods were converted to forward sliding hoods in the early 18th century): Pendulum has repair to rod. The weights, key, and pulleys are the correct type and may be original to the movement. Overall a stunningly handsome clock by one of the world's most famous clockmakers.
