DESCRIPTION: French & Porthouse, London, spring detent pocket chronometer, 14 jewels, key wind and set gilt plate movement, with Earnshaw's escapement, free sprung, cut bimetallic with gold timing screws, helical balance spring and diamond endstone in an unusual American Watch Case Co. sterling silver, hinged back and bezel, engine turned open face case and Roman numeral, single sunk white enamel dial, gold spade and poker hands, serial #7282, 46mm, c1870 (movement), c1895 (case) .
CONDITION: CASE: Late 19th century, purpose made for this movement; Small dings and case knife marks; Fine scratches on outer surface of case; Minor scratches on inner surface of case; Crystal with fine scratches, flake; Minor glue residue under crystal; Precious metal content marked. DIAL: Tiny flake at center arbor, otherwise very good. HANDS: Minute repaired. MOVEMENT PLATES: Minor scratches on plate; Scratches and dings on balance cock foot. MOVEMENT FUNCTION: Running order (winds, sets and ticks) ; Detent spring repaired, at foot. The case design would indicate that the watch was meant to be housed in a deck watch box, and not to be carried in the pocket.
