Raiff Swiss two train captain's watch with hack function, key wind key set gold flashed bar mvt with counterpoised moustache lever escapement and parachute shock absorber in engraved YGF OF case with scene of man hunting with his dog on rear cover and RN porcelain dial with two chapter rings for two time zones at 3 and 6 and both subsidiary and hack sweep seconds, 52mm Running in one train, not the other. Both trains set well and the hack feature works. The mvt is in good condition with some loss to gold flashing and specks of dirt. The gold filled case is still sharply engraved with a little brass wearing through on stem and a couple of wrinkles in rear cover. The dial has a major repair above left hour chapter and several hairlines. The bow, crystal and hands are in good condition.
55 $300 $400 Charmilles Genève Swiss by the famous American Watchmaker Albert Potter, 7J stem wind pendant set NI mvt marked "POTTER'S PATENTS" and incorporating the base metal case into the top plate of the mvt housed in elaborately decorated base metal OF case with horse scene embossed in relief on silver escutcheon set in center of rear cover with AN porcelain dial, s#138034 44mm GRO (winds, sets and ticks) slightly weak motion, the mvt is in very good condition with one tiny spot of rust near perimeter, some light oxidation of the bright work and some very light sporadic spotting noticeable with magnification on top plate. The case is in good condition showing average wear to the relieved images, but not yet worn entirely smooth. The dial has one light hairline running from 9 through the center arbor to 3. The crown, bow, crystal and hands are all in good condition. In addition to producing some of the most elegant watches in America and Switzerland, Potter also designed this inexpensive, early and hard to find "dollar" watch.

The brass is nicely patinated with one small dent in the strip along the right rear of the case. The watch is for photographic purposes and is not part of the lot. This piece is an early and unusual hutch in very good condition.

The case is in good condition with microfine scratches on plain polished case back and one or two very small wrinkles in case band. The intricate and unusual porcelain dial has one very light hl and three small flakes and one small chip hidden under bezel. The watch includes an interesting detachable leather band.

The case has moderate wear and two very light scratches across case back and slight nicks near periphery of rear case cover where the front and rear case join. The original dial is in excellent condition with no major blemishes or discoloration. The plastic crystal has one thin black scuff mark.
68 $800 $1000 Universal Genève Polerouter De Luxe triple signed with sweep seconds, automatic cal 138SS 17J stainless mvt in heavy 18K rose gold case with heavy curved lugs and two tone champagne and gilt dial with baton hour markers and triangular quarter hour markers, s#1819648 37mm 43.5g TW GRO, great overall condition. The mvt is bright with some very minor scratches on winding wheel, heavy 18K case has uniform very light wear with no significant scratches. The original dial is pristine without any discoloration or loss. The crystal is fine.
69 $2000 $3000 Vacheron & Constantin Lecoultre Watches Inc "Vacheron Galaxy" triple signed "LeCoultre" with cal 480/CW 17J unadjusted manual NI mvt stamped "VXN" in 14K WG round case with 36 diamond platinum colored metal mystery dial and suede Le Coultre band, s#1138933 29mm diameter including pristine original box, instructions and small LeCoultre sales booklet This is a rare prize to come to market as it is in essentially new old stock condition complete with box and paperwork. GRO (mvt winds, sets and ticks well) mvt is almost without blemish and very bright with two tiny microfine scratches, the back of the dial surrounding the mvt shows some oxidation while the dial face is perfect without any hint of oxidation. The case is also near mint with only a few fine scratches with inside of case reading "CASED AND TIME IN U.S.A. BY LE COUTRE 727-722-1030 09034" and the outside rear case cover signed with both V&C and Lecoultre names and also a 1956 presentation. The crystal and crown are both in excellent condition. GRO (mvt winds, sets and ticks well) and the hack function works well, the mvt is in very good condition with a small area of oxidation near the balance cap jewel and a couple of other very minor blemishes. The case and the ordinance show some light wear but the ordinance is still clearly legible and a decent silver patina has developed. The excellent dial is well matched with the case and mvt and has no defects. The crown and bow show some average wear with the top of the crown appearing brassy. The hands are excellent and the crystal shows some light hairlines.

City and Bedford Sq." with gold hands, s#298, 298 also inscribed on winged key, mvt set in brass tub on gimbals in mahogany box with ivory or bone plaque numbered "298" on outside of box and brass handles, c1850 GRO (winds, sets and ticks well), the wind indicator functions normally and the balance motion is a little sluggish but OK and the mvt is in good condition overall with no major tarnishing (one small area of discoloration where balance was secured by object), some minor spotting and good screw slots. The both plates have a few minor areas of dried oil and a uniform coating of microfine surface scratches. The silvered dial is in fair to good condition overall and shows some light tarnish around the perimeter, a small fingerprint near 4 and almost unnoticeable spotting. There are two keys included, one to set the time and one to open the inner box and the gold hands look good. The deep rich mahogany box is in condition with brass inlays stretching all four corners and a brass key escutcheon. James Eiffe was an eccentric 19th century chronometer maker, known for giving proper names to his chronometers, many which traveled on important British expeditions of the day and for his investigations of the middle temperature error in balance wheels.

The brass housing, marked on rear "NO 1288" and the brass gimbals are in good condition with some slight oxidation and an overall decent patina. The inner mahogany box retains the original finish and the outer travel box is well-fitted. This is a very nice example overall.

Typical of Poole's week chronometers, the balance and detent are carried in a separate pair of plates, all with finely turned pillars. Mvt is complete and sound. The reflector ring on the bezel is slightly large for the dial. The old/original winding key is included and mvt runs briskly. The dial is 4.5" and the width of box is 7".

The bottom plate has a few minor spots of dried oil and a slightly dirty / dusty coating noticed under magnification that would be removed with a cleaning. The silvered dial is in excellent condition with no damage or tarnishing and only a very light coating of dirt that would be removed with cleaning. The key is a replacement and the gold hands look great. The deep rich mahogany box is in condition with brass inlays stretching all four corners and brass key escutcheon. The associated outer travel box includes a leather strap and has had its top repaired.
89 $2700 $3500 Robert Roskell, Liverpool English small earlier marine chronometer in its original, round edge, rounded brass cornered box, 54 hour duration. The dial plate measures 3.5" and the chapter measures 3", c1831 except for a new gimbal/tub lock in the front corner, later key to lock and seconds hand, this is in overall very good to excellent original condition, movement running briskly. The well engraved dial bears the fractional number 575/44050, the first being the # of the chronometer, the second is this item in total of all items produced by Roskell. Typical of this period, the up-down indicator gives additional reminders: Up, Wind (at 24 hour mark), Two Days (at 48 hour mark), and Down (at 54 hour mark). Large gold hands are original, brass second's hand is replaced. The original one way winding key is attached to the winding shaft, and must have its retaining screw undone to take the movement out of its tub (small screw itself is replaced). A similar Roskell chronometer offered at Sotheby's, New York on April 4th, 2001, Lot 220, serial #1082 c1840, sold for the price of $7,201 (Approx £4800 at the time). The width is 6" and the height is 6.25".

The mvt has some very minor wear and some light oxidation around outer perimeter of bottom plate and a few fine scratches but otherwise fine. The silvered dial is very good with only very minor sporadic spotting and a very clean appearance. The brass tub is marked with matching serial #2170 and is housed in a later gimbaled mahogany box c1940 with replaced top lid that does not engage the latch. The key is a replacement. As recorded by Tony Mercer in "Chronometer Makers of the World", Negus used Mercer and later Kullberg movements (John David Negus and brother Thomas Stewart Negus).

The silvered dial has a few small scuff and nick marks around the center arbor resulting in loss of silvering and a slight uniform coating of dirt but otherwise fine. The brass tub is marked "4803" and is housed a little too tightly within a period English mahogany inner box with some damage on right front corner of bottom half of box. The key is a replacement and the bezel shows a few spots of oxidation and there is no crystal.

The dial is superior with only the lightest ring left from where bezel contacts the dial surface and absolutely no other flaws. The brass tub is in very good condition and retains the original thumb screw contact terminals to run the slave dial(s) and is housed in original mahogany box with brass corners and a few scuffs and scratches mainly on the rear of the case.

The dial is in excellent condition with almost no spotting and no discoloration, light impression of broad arrow mark remains in subsidiary seconds dial. The brass tub is in very good condition and is stamped 9569 with a 43 stamped adjacent to and above the 69 corresponding to the mvt # and is housed in original mahogany box with brass corners with a couple of scratches on the top of the case and some slight oxidation to housing around well made brass handles that fold in flush to box. The silvered dial is in good condition with some fine scratches near 8 and Co and a light stain near 5 and very minor spotting seen under magnification. Plastic crystal is a little loose with some microfine surface scratches. The inner box is missing its top lid and the outer travel box is original to the inner box and has a leather strap and retains a 1952 port of entry receipt acknowledging an M. Tobias chronometer #1449 entering the port of New Orleans. Note after 1900, Hadlock's chronometer movements were imported from Kullberg, London, however the stepped taper pillars & plate layout on this are not similar to Kullberg's.

The dial is near mint, the slightest bit faded but no hairlines nor other flaws. The bow and crystal are in good condition. The blued steel spade hands are in good condition with a little loss to the bluing. This is a 2-star watch in Shugart, Engle and Gilbert's "WATCHES" price guide. The dial is excellent with only the tiniest flake hidden under the bezel near 2 and on other flaws. The crown has a 10% section missing exposing the brass underneath and should be replaced. The bow, crystal and hands are all in excellent condition. This is a another good example of E. Howard's unusual G-size and it is very unusual to see three good examples come to auction at once.

The Western Watch Company was formed by Albert Trotter and Paul Cornell and others, after Mr. Trotter left the California Watch Co. and moved to Chicago. The extremely heavy and well made case with one of my favorite features, hidden hinges, shows average wear with uniform fine to microfine scratching on the outer gold surfaces and a couple of fine scratches on inside of case cover also marked 3230 and the slide has a little gummy residue built up underneath but no major defects. The dial has a few specks of dirt on it but is otherwise perfect with no hairlines or other flaws. The crown shows a little brass wearing through. The bow, crystal and blued steel spade hands are all in good condition. The firm Jacques & Marcus was located at 857 Broadway in New York City and eventually became known as Marcus & Co when the younger Marcus brother entered the family business involving his father and elder brother. They were well known high-end jewelers in the Art Nouveau style and retailers of Patek Philippe. In the mid-twentieth century Marcus & Co. merged with Black, Starr & Frost, who was subsequently absorbed by Kay Jewelers and then Sterling Inc. in the late twentieth century.

The dial is excellent with no hairlines or other major defects. The solid gold case with gold cuvette and snap-on bezel has very light wear and no dents or ding. The bow and crown have light wear, good glass crystal with no chips or cracks.

The solid gold case has several small dings and wrinkles both case covers and the cuvette and the cuvette gets wedged inside the lip of rear case cover and needs to be released carefully from being pinned behind the lip when exposing mvt. The dial is slightly dirty has no hairlines but would be mint once cleaned. The bow and the crown are rose gold colored and worn. The crystal is fine and the hands are somewhat oxidized (replaced seconds hand).

The mvt is Continental fabricated for the English market imitating English mvts of an earlier period and is in fair condition with steel parts oxidized partially. The silver plated case is in very good condition and lightly tarnished and has average wear to the figures in relief. The dial has a couple of light hairlines and several shallow surface scratches that have collected a little dirt but is overall still very attractive. There is no crystal and the Louis XV style hands are slightly tarnished. This is a charming piece that would great displayed.

This is a very fine and complete mvt and in the hands of a restoration expert could be returned to its former glory. George Graham (b. 1674 - d. November 1751) was a preeminent English clock and watchmaker, inventor, and geophysicist who apprenticed under Thomas Tompion and is most famous for inventing the dead beat escapement.
